I've had an internal battle the last few days about what I should do with those few quiet hours I have after the kids fall asleep. I've been anxious to get lost in a book. Oh what a wonderful escape a book would be! I have several on the shelf to start, but one that is particularly tempting is the second book in the Hunger Games series, Catching Fire. The problem is I have gotten miserably behind on laundry folding and although we've been home since Sunday evening, I still hadn't unpacked our suitcase from our weekend trip to Vegas as well.
I have proof:
For the record, I did not pack all of those shoes to come with me to Vegas. An earlier version of myself pre-marriage and pre-children probably would have, but I proudly claim to have brought only two pairs for the weekend. :)
and this isn't counting the laundry that was waiting for me in the laundry room....mercy!
One of my dear friends has always maintained that
"a book is never more pleasurable to read than when there is laundry waiting to be folded."
I agree. The book may be enjoyable in the moment, but the guilt felt is overwhelming after the fact when you are no longer lost in an alternate reality of fiction whilst turning pages and are staring at the actual reality of the kids no longer being able to dress themselves because their only clean underwear is at the bottom of the laundry basket still waiting to be folded. Oops.
Last night I battled with sleep vs. book. I knew I needed sleep. The morning before Savvy had woken me up at 2am and I was unable to fall back asleep for the rest of the morning. Tonight, I am proud to announce that the laundry won over the book. I'll get a date in with Catching Fire at some point....
Can't you just feel the weight off my shoulders as you look at the clothing free floors?! So much better.
Ta Da!
Editor's note: I woke up this morning with a cold sore. This is the second occurance that after I stayed up late to fold and put away laundry that I woke up with a cold sore. I think it's safe to say I'm allergic to laundry now; my body just can't handle the stress. Or maybe I shouldn't let it get this bad so it's not such an ordeal. Yes, it's probably the latter, but don't you find it oddly coincidental????

I'm sure I've told you this before, but, there's a reason I never encounter the laundry=folding issue at my house. Years ago, I decided to get rid of all my laundry baskets (the ones for the clean clothes, not the hampers), save one that I use to cart the wet clothes out to the line if/when I line dry. With no where else to put the clothes, I'm forced to fold everything as I take it out of the dryer. The washer/dryer is next to the bedrooms, so I tend to walk back and forth as I fold, putting things away. I timed it once. I can do an entire load, even putting stuff away, in less than 10 minutes.
The rest of my housekeeping is truly awful, but I never have to face a basket full of clean socks and underwear, wondering why I never seem to reach bottom.
Wow, I'm inspired by the above comment! I'm ashamed to say that our clean laundry (especially the whites) has been known to sit in its laundry basket for days before making it to the dresser/closet. :(
Good job on not giving in to the escape of a good book! It's going to be a quick Utah trip next week, but I really hope I get to see you! :)
I'm laughing . . . lack of laundry baskets never stopped me from not folding the clothes! Way to go with the cleaing, and the big question is - do you love the book?
The leisure-versus-necessary-chores is a battle I fight way too often. =) Good for you for choosing laundry to win out! I'm on the verge of reading "Catching Fire" too, but I know from my "Hunger Games" experience that I need some uninterrupted time for it or else... =D
