Today

I'm getting anxious to catch up on birthdays, Christmas and other special days of note that I haven't taken the time to put on the blog but I know full well I have not the energy or time for that tonight. Instead, I'll just blog about today.

Today the weather was glorious. 70 something. We went to Cade's soccer game in the morning which was chilly. I asked Savvy twice if she wanted to bring a jacket but she was certain she'd be fine without one.  She later regretted it but Daddy was nice and loaned her his black vest.

Kyle could give you a more technical assessment of the game, but as far as I could tell, the boys from both teams looked great. Cade scored enough times to feel good about himself and they were pretty evenly matched.  Ruby is getting harder to bring to the games because she wants to run out into the field.  She can't make up her mind who should hold her, so Kyle and I traded her off about a dozen times easily.

Savvy had a play date today as did Cade. Makes me grateful they have good friends. I look back on the day and I realize I didn't get much done today inside the house. But it needs it. Dishes are in the sink, clothes needing to be folding and every single room in the house needs to be picked up and every surface needs to be wiped. Another day, perhaps?

After Ruby went down for her nap, I left and ran 10 miles this afternoon. I'm starting to get a little apprehensive about my longer runs. next week I do 15. I can't remember the last time I ran 15 miles.

Tonight  I attended the Young Women's broadcast. Beautiful music and great words. One of my favorite gems of the evening from President Monson:

"Life by the yard is hard. Life by the inch is a cinch."

As for next week I want to....

Register Savvy for kindergarten (sniff sniff)
Paint Cade's bedroom
Run 4,7,5, then 15 miles
Fold all the laundry and put it away
Dust
Scrub the kitchen floor
Vacuum
Wipe down every surface
Scrub toilets
Enjoy Conference!

Photos from a year ago that we just downloaded from Cade's camera:

Bailey and Ruby. I can't believe how YOUNG Ruby is here. Time goes too, too fast.

I love seeing my kids smile and hugging.

Apparently I'm not very pleased with my last bowl...

This is Lego City in Cade's room. Looks so different now!

The Regular-like days

A couple weekends ago my childhood girlfriend came into town (this friend). She asked what I've been up to, and what I do...and it got me thinking while there's a great deal of busy yet mundane-ness in our lives, there's also a host of sweet moments which I try to capture with my camera and it was high time I got those photos off my phone and camera and document them respectably.

That particular week my friend was in town seemed to encompass a little of everything that happens.  I had been up all night with a sick baby, cleaned up puke 4 times in the wee hours of the morning. I totally forgot to send Valentines with Savannah to preschool {may I insert here what a gem that girl is. When she came home from preschool with a bag FULL of Valentines from other classmates it dawned on me I forgot to send hers to school. I kept apologizing profusely and Savannah sweetly responded, "It's okay, Mom. It's not a big deal. Really!" Her nonchalance about this made me want to cry.} I took children to piano lessons and music. I made lunches and changed diapers. I bought socks and toothpaste.  The list is not interesting but sometimes I feel like it's worth noting. If nothing else to recognize that I did in fact do more than fold laundry and load the dishwasher.

I went through my snap-shots and picked out some moments on "regular-like" days.  These were moments captured under ordinary circumstances but for some reason, the moment seemed especially worth savoring.  While many of these photographs are of sub-par quality, I am glad to have the option to snap a photo with my phone because most of these moments would not be recorded if I didn't have the ease and convenience of reaching into my back pocket.

What else do I do on regular-like days?

Playdates. I've been trading with my friend Cissy in the neighborhood. She has a son Savvy's age and a daughter Ruby's age. I've enjoyed having them in the morning once a week. The children get along swimmingly.

I especially liked this shot because all the kids were in the same room playing together. It was just so sweet I wanted to remember it always.

Celia and Ruby. They will grow up to be good friends! For now they are somewhat indifferent to each other, {more like Ruby's personal bubble is extremely large for the time being} but as each playdate goes by, they show more and more interest in each other.

On another day, this time crafting.

Even Ruby got in on the coloring fun! Here she is, quite proud of herself.

Admire my little girls. One of my guilty pleasures is dressing my girls alike. Savvy loves it, too, so that makes it double the fun.  I'm in my last year where they are in the same clothing section so I'm savoring this.  This was taken after the girls woke up from her afternoon nap and were just hanging out together on the couch. They look nothing alike but they really are sisters!

Conjure up creativity for my children's behalf.  I don't claim to have a fondness for crafting, nor do I craft on a regular basis. My children bring out the creativity in me (or at least the gumption to Google creative and crafty ideas). This was Valentine's Day morning. I cranked these Valentines out late the night before and Cade signed them and helped me glue gun the legos to the Valentine's which say "You are the coolest friend on the BLOCK!"

For the record, Cade came up with the cute little circles to dress up his signature all on his own. It was pretty adorable watching him adorn each letter with them.

Become an expert on historical figures.  Cade had a project to do on the Great American, Neil Armstrong.  We read a book together about him and then wrote a report. Cade dictated to me exactly what to type, including when to insert the commas and periods. We made a great team. This is him reading his report dressed up as a NASA engineer. If you need to know anything about Mr. Armstrong I am your girl. That week I was feeling like I knew him better than my own self!

Promote authorship.  Cade had an assignment to write and publish his own book. He decided to write about inventing the famous "Triple Flavored Sandwich."  We went to school when he read it to his class.  He was pretty thrilled with the whole thing!

Pose for pictures to oblige my husband.  Kyle got the biggest kick out of my shirt and how much it reminded him of his favorite throw pillows.  As you can see I'm thrilled with the idea.

Plan funerals for pets.  Regretfully we inform you that Dunkin the Fish died. It wasn't long after Christmas when he decided to move on to the next life. The children handled it rather well. We held a service in the bathroom for him before flushing him down the toilet.

Hang out at Barnes and Noble.  I'm so sad Borders is gone. It's taken me a while to get used to our new bookstore hangout, but Barnes and Noble about as enjoyable a spot to browse through books.  They have a fun spot in the children's book section to build with Duplos.

Read poetry.  And this isn't just any poetry. This is Cade's own! I loved catching sight of this during a walk down the 2nd grade hall.  This poem aptly describes my little Cade.  He really is terrified of tornadoes and earthquakes truly do make him sad.

Visit the Urgent Care. This notable visit was on Kyle's birthday. Instead of celebrating as a family somewhere fun and delicious, we decided Cade should see a doctor to get his toe checked out. It was slightly infected and was bothering him a great deal.  Savannah was so concerned and sweet about Cade. She asked to join us because she wanted to make sure he'd be okay. Cade was very anxious, fearing he had an ingrown toenail and would have to get a shot in his toe so the doctor could fix it. He was so relieved when the doctor suggested an antibiotic first to see how that would clear his infection.

Catch glimpses of local celebrities.  I got an e-mail David Archuletta was going to be at the local Deseret Book store just a few minutes from our home. We were on our way out together as a family to run some errands so I had Kyle drop Sav and I off at Deseret Book so we could see him. The line to meet him was well out the door and down the side of the building so Sav and I just "browsed" the book section in the store where David was meeting people and got a few snapshots to prove we were there.

David's sitting down in the checkered shirt

Savvy is the brunette in the black shirt and denim dress grasping the bar catching a glimpse of him from behind. Exciting!

Basketball: Jimmer Fever!  Ever since BYU's banner year thanks to Coach Rose, Jackson and Jimmer, not only am I following BYU basketball more, but so are the kids. Cade has gone so far as to say, "Mom, I'm not trying to be rude, but could I get a blue back pack?"  It turns out he is concerned people will mistake him for a Ute fan because his current back pack is red.  It took a lot to stifle my giggles during this conversation.

The Marriott Center held an awesome game called Jimmer's All Stars this past fall.  A bunch of great ball players including, of course, Jimmer himself were recruited to play in this game. It was a blast to watch and definitely a fun family activity.  This sort of thing doesn't happen regularly-- it was definitely a special occasion. This photo was taken  when Jimmer's brother was rapping during half time (you didn't know his brother was a rapper?  Well now you do!). Probably our least favorite part of the evening.  The game was great, though.

Clean up messes: Some are bigger than others.  I think if I ever went back into the work place, cleaning is where I feel I have the most experience and would feel the most at home. Not trying to be funny-- totally serious.

Run into people from my past.  Of all people and places I ran into my 7th Grade Science teacher Mrs. Hall in the LAX airport. She hasn't changed a bit. It was truly a delight to visit with her for a bit and catch up on, oh, the last 15 years or so.

Appreciate feats of sacrifice.  On one of my long runs down the trail, I spotted this BYU ROTC crew.  I was so inspired by this view I had to snap a photo.   Turns out they had to go 20 total miles like this. Huge props to the girl in this crew and to all who have accomplished this amazing feat of running 20 miles with a pack in combat boots. My ten mile run that day no longer seemed very awesome. I quickly admitted that what I was doing was very mediocre.

Celebrate birthdays with my sisters and momma.  I love living close to my family so doing this is possible.  Rebecca picked the awesome activity of getting pedis before eating dinner.  This was her first pedicure post surgery. I know none of us have model feet, but she and I are OH SO PROUD of our post-bunion feet.

Admire stunning views. Thanks to a very mild winter I have enjoyed amazing weather on every single one of my long Saturday runs for the last several weeks.  Each time I run down this trail I am speechless at the beauty I get to enjoy.

Party plan. Who would have thought the "event planning" section of my PR major would later assist me in my future room mother-like responsibilities?  I've enjoyed being in Cade's classroom on all the holidays and Savvy really loves being able to come and pretend she's a 2nd grader for an hour. The students treat her extra special and take great care to make sure she feels included.

Jump the van. The battery in the van always seems to die on me when Kyle is out of town thanks to a door left open open or light left on.  Fortunately he left his truck at home during this particular dead battery moment so I was able to get out of my own mess without calling on my neighbors yet again.

More playdates!  This one was with our neighborhood friends Goos. After lunch the kids wanted to gather on the kitchen the floor to eat their popsicles while they listened to Gaby tell about the Mr. Bean movie. Adorableness.

And there you have a slice of our life.

I had twins 6 years apart

I've said for months and months now how much Ruby resembles Cade. I dressed her up in the Santa Suit to compare with the photo shoot I had with Cade 7 years ago. Some people have disagreed with me so here's the proof that I had identical twins (minus the gender part-- ha ha!) six years apart. :)

Reminders

This month has been so full of reminders.
Reminders of how much I love and care about people in my life.

For Family Home Evening the day after Mary's birthday, the kids picked out balloons and wrote messages to their Gramma Berry and Cousin Benjamin. We attached them to the ribbon and visited the Angel Garden where Benjamin was laid to rest.

We got to see his headstone for the first time. It's beautiful. And while being there is a solemn experience for me, my children are always so full of joy and life at the cemetary. I'm glad for that. I just don't want them to forget the sacred nature of remembering our late loved ones.

I'm so glad they remember both Mary and Ben. I hope they don't ever forget them.

That same weekend my friend Laurel sent an e-mail to our book club requesting to meet with all of us if possible. We settled on a time after a few e-mails back and forth. I was expecting something like a new job...or she's met a new guy...or something. Instead,  Laurel dropped a bombshell on the Bookettes.

She was going in for breast cancer surgery Friday the 13th.

She was so calm about it that while the emotionally high-strung inner self of mine wanted to weep and wail, I couldn't. So I didn't.  It hits so close to home in so many ways, but mostly, I just felt so BUMMED for her. Cancer is a major disruption in one's life. Fortunately fighting it is an option, but it's a long road. I know, who am I to talk that it's a long road? Not me. But I've watched it. And I'm watching it with my friend across the street. And now sweet Laurel. She's been so strong, so optimistic and so matter-of-fact about it. That's how she IS, so I'm not sure if I would expect anything else from her-- but it's just so hard to say what we'd expect from anyone if they were given life-altering news.

It may seem weird, but I really wanted to take a photograph of this day. I felt like it was an important one to document in our book club history. We've all been through stuff, and this was certainly no exception.  I have a secret love for reading fictional novels about book clubs or gal-pal groups whose friendship spans a few decades. In EVERY single blasted book one of the gals gets cancer. I never thought that we would be following suit. Blast.

Here she is, donned in pink (pink ring, earrings, pink rose pin, pink pinstripes in her classy black suit AND a pink bowl in which she brought her frog-eye salad in for all of us to enjoy at lunch. YUM.

I love this girl!

Here we are on Friday the 13th, wearing pink in support of our Laurel.  Forunately surgery went well and she seems to be recovering nicely.

I know it's just the beginning for her, but so far she's off to a great start.

And finally...

I know I'm always talking about how much I love my neighbors, but recently I have been reminded just how much I adore these people. Almost 3 weeks ago Mr. Dick went to the hospital complaining of chest pains. The next morning he went in for a quadruple bypass. He's 86 years old and if a man can be in "mint" condition, this guy is. He works out at the gym, golfs, gardens. He is in excellent health. Minus that terrible problem that one of his arteries was completely blocked and the other one was 80% blocked. I'm so grateful he went into the hospital when he did. Had he waited much longer, the sweet man might not be with us.

The kids adore our neighbors and were equally concerned. At night they started calling him "Dick" instead of "brother Hawkins" in their prayers to bless him to get better. We had to explain that Kyle and I could call him by his first name, but they couldn't.  It was cute though.

Fast forward to last Sunday. Kyle was bringing sweet Libby home from visiting Dick who was recovering and she told him she had been having some pressure on her chest. After he dropped her off at home he came home and told me I should go check on her. I knocked on her door and she didn't look too good. And she mentioned some chest pain. I don't like to mess around with chest pain so I told her we were going to the urgent care. She didn't put up a fight--which is rare for this sweet gal because she is always so concerned about being a bother to people that she usually says "Oh, I'll be alright."

Once we arrived at the urgent care and Miss Libby explained why she was there, they ushered us straight to a room without even filling out paper work. The nurse took her blood pressure and started asking if Libby had various other symptoms, to which Libby did.
Her blood pressure was extremely high and the sweet nurse told us we needed to go straight to the ER. So that we did. Libby was so mad at herself. Like she had control over her blood pressure!  She kept saying "I'm going home TONIGHT and I am NOT going to have heart surgery."  Aside from the serious nature of the ER visit, I had fun hanging out with Miss Libby in that hospital room. She's so full of energy. We said a prayer together in her little hospital room and that prayer was answered. She was put on medication and responded to it wonderfully. Now is it a coincidence that when her sister shared the news that Huntsman was out of the Republican Presidential race and was endorsing Mitt that her blood pressure dropped significantly?  Ha! Ha!  The doctor informed us that according to her chest x-ray and blood work that there was no sign of heart trouble and no need for surgery. I was relieved to say the least, as was Dick and her family. It was so cute seeing her with her son and sister who came to the ER to visit her with their spouses.

Today they were outside enjoying the gorgeous non-January-like weather and I saw Miss Libby and Mister Dick walking. They just looked so adorable that I had to run inside and grab the camera. I asked if they'd let me take a picture and before I could take the lens cap off the camera, Mister Dick was pulling a comb out of his pocket and smoothing out his silver hair. Adorable!

Here is the lovely couple.
84 and 86 never looked so good, did it?

When it comes to Halloween, I'm a bit of a communist...

If I had a LEAST favorite holiday, it would probably have to be Halloween. I am not a lover of skulls, monsters and all things creepy. However, each year as my kids grow older, I find myself enjoying the "holiday" more and more. I'm acknowledging it as more of a memory maker than a holiday with tacky decorations and eery costumes, which is fantastic.

When I finally sat myself down in front of the computer to do a Google search for costume ideas, I did not expect to find Cade's costume so quickly. But as soon as I saw this, I knew it was "the one."  Cade loves Legos, so this was totally him. And I appreciated that we could (in theory anyway) construct this together. You know, be a bonding experience.  I never showed him this picture, though in hindsight, I think getting his costume constructed would have been a lot less painful if I had. Just telling him he was going to be a Lego left him feeling very frustrated and unexcited about the project. The whole "constructing the costume" together didn't go quite as as planned. It was more Cade crossing his arms saying "I don't want to be this!" and me finally deciding if he wasn't going to do it then I better hurry and finish. It wasn't until I was done with a final touch-up job spray-painting his costume that he finally saw it as a Lego and was excited.

So, the end result left him feeling pretty contented about his costume, thank heavens. I sent him off to school that day in a red shirt, soccer cleats, and pants then personally delivered the costume at school (it was still a little wet. I don't think the bus driver would have appreciated wet spray paint on his seats). It was gratifying seeing his shy, yet proud smile of this costume "we" created together, with the help of Dad.

I joined Cade at school for some festivities in his classroom later that day and decided to really get into the Halloween Spirit. In case you've ever wondered what I'd look like as a blonde, well, here ya go:

Giving it my best "Snow Queen" glare

I wasn't sure if Cade was happy or embarrassed by my costume. Maybe a little of both?

Savvy won the prize for wearing the most costumes during our weekend of Halloween festivities. She was a cowgirl riding a horse, monkey, princess and finally, my very favorite:

Can you guess?

Probably not. I'm confessing that while I allow my children to think they are choosing their costumes, I definitely put a communistic twist to it.  Once I decide their costume, I do my best to make them think it's their idea, and then I push it and praise it.  And then when they change their minds, I don't let them.

Is that so terrible? Sigh....

These were sure cute costumes to construct. Even if the Lego bumps weren't attached symmetrically.

Ruby wore the flower costumer that Savvy kind of wore, but was too big for when she was a baby. My friend Karen Brown gave this to me when we lived in Illinois. I always think of my sweet friend Karen whenever I pull out this costume of hers.

Getting a picture of all three is impossible...

Maybe you can relate?

Sadly, I think this was the best one:

For inquiring minds, Savannah is Ramona Quimby. She's wearing those bunny ears that Beezus was always so embarrassed of her sister wearing. And we have her wearing the classic red boots and rain slicker because not even the rainiest of weather keeps Ramona inside. And lastly, of course, is the little bunny Ramona took to show and tell for Kindergarten. The class laughed at the tattered bunny, so Ramona's sweet teacher pulled out a beautiful red ribbon to tie around its neck.

Savvy reminds me of Ramona in so many ways. She is spunky and spirited and has the funniest take on life's everyday occurrences. Thanks Savvy, for indulging me and dressing up like one of my favorite childhood characters.

As for Kyle and I, we spent most of Halloween weekend campaigning...
Meet Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul!

You can't tell very well, but Kyle spray-painted his hair silver just for the occasion. I forgot to wear the red, white and blue scarf my neighbor loaned me (it looked super sharp with the suit!) but notice my awesome American flag pin. I swear, if I ever need anything, I just have to pop over next door to my neighbor Libby. She's the greatest.

Don't forget to vote Iowa!  Caucus night is coming up!

You must know I am truly a Mitt Romney fan through and through, but it was fun being Bachmann for a weekend.

I have really eaten up watching the debates, listening to talk radio analyze the media spin, and watching my man Mitt rise in the polls.
